It forms the back-bone of our specialty courses. iii `Ĥ iv ISA Specialty Course: Appraisal of Antiques, Furnishings + Decorative Arts The AF+DA course has always been a standard-bearer within our industry. We also recognize two of our first instructors, Karen Rabe and David Mapes, who spent many years updating and presenting the material on a yearly basis. Our sincere thanks to all others who have contributed to this revision, including Ellen Amirkhan, Philip Hawkins, June Hayes, Rob Hittel, Marigold Lamb, and Tom McNulty. Special thanks to our current co-editors and revisionists, Libby Holloway, ISA CAPP, and instructor Mickey Logan, ISA CAPP, who both did a commendable job worthy of high distinction, and to our other current ISA AF+DA on-site instructor, Valerie Hale. Our thanks go out to them all named or unnamed. This text is a revision of others done in the past, and, as such, it has many authors and contributors since it was a collaboration of specialists. We do provide an extensive bibliography for each section. Since one item can have many values depending on the intended use of an appraisal and the appraiser s objective, providing prices would be counterproductive. The methodology for pricing (appraising) is done in the ISA Core Course. It is for identification, evaluation, and connoisseurship. Vehicles, tools, lawn equipment and items found in garages, basements, and sheds are touched on briefly, since they usually must be done for estate or divorce proceedings, and often do not necessitate a specialized commercial machinery and/or equipment expert. Appliances and electronics are more contemporary and deal with things one would find in the average modern house. (This information is important for any subsequent study of furniture.) Toys and dolls begin with their Victorian origins and quickly advance to the 1940s and 1950s. ![]() For example, antique furniture starts in the 1600s and then examines French, English, and American styles and forms. Some topics are covered in more detail than others. It provides the information necessary for anyone seeking to become an appraiser, dealer, auctioneer, or estate sale agent, or anyone seeking a comprehensive and thorough foundation of the world of antiques, collectibles, and general residential contents. This is one of the only texts that cover the contents of a house from attic to basement, wall décor to floor coverings. Admittedly, most of the information is on 19th and 20th century furniture and accessories since it forms the basis for how we examine and analyze residen-tial property. The AF+DA (Antiques, Furnishings + Decorative Arts) course was developed to provide specialty knowledge for those appraisers who cover the world of general household contents both antique and contemporary. One of its aims was to provide education to its members, assuring that correct and proper terminology, methodology, and principles would be followed in both developing and communicating valuation reports.
